Learning and Earning--How Are They Related?
o
"People are born to learn."
Without learning we would not survive. The species, entomologists tell us,
that has been on our planet the longest is the lowly ant. Now how did those tiny creatures
manage that? They were the most efficient adapters. meaning they paid attention to
their immediate surroundings and were ready and able to change their ways in a
blink.
o
We have become used to thinking of "learning" as what is taught in school.
Actually that is a tiny fraction of the learning we do in a lifetime. The
structure of our increasingly global economy and the ever changing innovations in
technology mandate a new strategy for survival. Maintenance of the status quo is
built in. We all want things to continue the way they are. It makes us feel
secure. Even if life isn't exactly what we dream of, we are used to it: change
requires a lot of effort! It is generally acknowledged that those with
the most "book" learning get and hold the best jobs. College applications are at
an all-time high, despite the cost, and acceptances very few. Only those who have
"done it all right" for their entire pre-college careers earn acceptance to their
school of choice. And that coveted acceptance is not solely dependent on academic
performance. Extra-curricular activities, community service, after school jobs,
all count. Recently, another option has become available.
Online learning is becoming increasingly common. There are many benefits to
learning online. Both students and teachers now have access to archives of
libraries and learning institutions worldwide. Smart people are learning to use the
internet for educational purposes.
o
Perhaps the greatest benefit is convenience. The online classroom is always
open. It can be reached from anywhere with an internet connection. Greater access
is useful for students living in rural areas, students with disabilities and those
who cannot attend scheduled classes because of other commitments such as work or
child-rearing. It can also reduce costs if there is less need to travel. There are
several foundations and other institutions making all out efforts to provide
computers to all children everywhere.
o
Online learning is typically self-paced, a benefit to those who are not
native speakers or slower learners who need to take extra time to develop answers.
The student can review material as many times as they want and references such as
dictionaries can be consulted.
o
Online teaching tends to be more student-centered where the role of the
teacher becomes that of a facilitator. It is often said that the teacher changes
from being a 'sage on the stage' to a 'guide on the side'. Students have access to
a huge range of resources on the internet-- resources that are not necessarily
text-based. The types of resources available include text, audio, video, graphics
and animations. However, as there are no gatekeepers on the web and anyone can
publish just about anything, students need to be taught how to evaluate and
discriminate among these resources.
o
These evaluation and discrimination skills can be extremely valuable in the
workplace as are the computer and technical skills learned in the process.
As yet there is no data available as to the success or failure of online studies
in the actual workplace. We can only take a "wait and see" stance on the outcome.
While waiting, we can hope the skills that students attain can also help them
become life-long learners and life-long earners.
