The Body Fat assessment
o
One of the most overlooked aspects of any diet and fitness program is
getting proper body fat assessments. This goes far beyond looking at a
scale to check your weight. You want to know that the weight you lost was fat, not
muscle or water. Taking the time for regular body fat tests will definitely help
you make faster progress toward your goal of your ideal weight.
o
The three main components of weight change come from water, muscle and fat. So
which one, or combination of the three, caused the weight loss? Regular body fat
tests provide the important answer. Dehydration and/or muscle loss can damage your
health -- it's the fat you want to lose!
o
Successful dieters and fitness pros take measurements, track their results
and adjust the program accordingly. If test results show that a total of 15
pounds of body weight was lost, a few calculations will break down what component
(water, muscle, or fat) had the majority of the weight change. Generally, if 1 to
4 pounds of weight loss was water and muscle -- the rest fat, then your diet
and fitness program is working for you and you should continue it. If only 5
pounds of weight from the 15 is fat according to the body fat test, there is a
problem with the program. It would be wise to make changes before dehydration or
muscle wasting advances. A change in the program and another assessment 4 to 6
weeks later will determine if the new program is resulting in fat loss rather than
water or muscle loss.
o
The regular testing has the added advantage of keeping you motivated to
continue. If you are truly losing fat, you will look well and feel better, whereas
weight loss from dehydration or muscle wasting can leave you feeling weak and
hungry (the main reason most diets fail.)
o
Once you realize the importance of body fat testing, you can decide whether
you want a professional assessment person to test you, or learn to do it
yourself. There are advantages and disadvantages to each decision.
o
A professional body fat tester can be found in most fitness centers and
gyms. They have the experience, knowledge and tools to make accurate tests and can
suggest a course of action to improve the results of the next test. It takes on
the average about 15 to 30 minutes to complete and you will get a copy of the
test to keep. The cost can range between twenty to fifty dollars per test and
should be done every 4 to 6 weeks. If you decide to do the test yourself, you must
learn to take proper body fat measurements, purchase the equipment for
accurate assessment and test many times to learn to do it properly. The advantages
of doing your own testing are cost saving over time and the convenience of testing
as often as you want in the privacy of your own home. it may be wise to have
a professional do the original testing, help you learn how it is done, and offer
suggestions about how to improve your results. Body fat testing may be the
key ingredient in any successful weight loss and fitness program.
