Dressing the Part may be an old rule but dressing to impress continues to play a major
role in achieving the goals you set for yourself. In our fast moving lifestyles, the first
impression is likely to be the only impression you will have a chance at. So make the most
of it.

If you put as much thought and planning into choosing the clothes you wear
as you do in choosing all the other important things in your life, you will always look
appropriate for the occasion and true to your own taste and personality. Look around you!
Students all wear jeans and shirts, but do they all look alike? No, of course not. They
each inject their own personality into colors, fabrics, etc. The same is true for dressing
for a corporate job. Everyone wears a business suit. Does everyone look alike? No!
When dressing for an evening affair, a wedding, or a black tie dinner, know the accepted
standards for these various occasions and know that the standards are open to a wide
degree of personal choice.

Pay attention to current trends. What's "IN" or "OUT" is easily determined
by glancing through any well-known fashion magazine. Vogue, Harper's
Bazaar, Glamour, Seventeen, and many others have been popular for generations,
and despite the electronic revolution, will continue to be popular because people CARE
about how they appear to colleagues, friends and neighbors. Her are seven little rules
(like the seven dwarfs?) to help when choosing a wardrobe:

1. Wear what is appropriate for the occasion. This is perhaps the
most important rule of all. You may not stand out from the crowd, but that is a risky
road. It is safer to look conventional and even conservative, allowing the "color" to show
in your interesting personality and conversation.

2. Be aware of your own natural coloring and wear clothing to show it off.
People with very dark hair and eyes look great in bright colors, Emerald green, Royal
blue, Bright Red. Blondes have to be careful of being overwhelmed by color -- stick to the
pales -- and redheads glow in the terra cotta range, browns, beiges, and soft misty
blue-green shades.

3. Match your makeup shades to the color of your clothing. An orange
suit needs an orangey lipstick.
o
4. Be sure your clothing fits you well. If you have a great figure show it
off. A beautiful outfit is not beautiful unless it fits the body beneath it.

5. Develop a style that is your own. Follow the current "INS" and
"OUTS" but do it in a way that is uniquely yours.
o
6. Always feel comfortable in your clothes (particularly shoes.) If
you don't, it shows, and will detract from your overall "looks great" score.
o
7. Last but not least: Accessories can make or break the look.
Choose carefully. Here is the area to go wild -- a simple dress or suit with eye-catching
jewelry, scarves, shoes, bag (not too many) will set you apart. People will look and
remember!

These considerations apply to men as well as to women. Men's business suits
in general have remained much the same for generations, but the colors and fabrics vary,
and should be chosen to suit the wearer. Casual men's clothing is as colorful as that for
women. Enjoy!
